Springy Apple Cable Savers

Springy Apple Cable Savers

The charging/connection cable for the new iPhone 6 / iPad Air is smaller than previous cables, making it prone to breaking at the joint between the connector and cable through use. To prevent this, a solution has been developed to help keep cables from breaking. Unlike other methods available to counteract this problem, the Springy Apple Cable Saver does not just transfer the flex / break point away from the cable / connector joint to another point further up the cable. Instead, it all but stops movement in the cable / connector joint area and controls the degree of curvature in the springy area, which prevents kinking / tight curves that can weaken the cable over time. The springy area is designed to be 'springy' so the cable springs back to near straight as much as possible, minimizing curvature that can result in it breaking. Three .stl files have been provided for printing: one includes just the device end, another includes just the usb end, and a third includes both ends. These designs print well on a Replicator 2 / 5th Generation Replicator, but the spring and designed internal support pin may prove challenging for some machines. To achieve a really springy result, PLA is recommended with three shells and a high percentage of infill. This design aims to be beneficial to many Apple device owners by keeping their cables in good condition. If you like this, check out more practical and fun designs.
