In 1842, the American-made Springfield smoothbore musket with a .69 caliber was introduced and widely used throughout the 19th century in the United States. Although similar to the 1816 model, it is considered a distinct variant, not an upgrade of the earlier design. The Springfield Arsenal and Harpers Ferry began production in 1844.
