Store your paint cans properly with this handy widget: a paint can clamp! Mount it on any standard pegboard with two 1/4-inch diameter fasteners, spaced one inch apart. Use 3/4- to 1-inch machine screws or bolts for the best results. The thread should easily tap itself into place. If you're concerned about the clamp failing, simply add an extra bolt under the can for added security.
