Spot On Reader is a learning tool designed to help beginner readers sound out and pronounce new words. The design allows for easy adjustments of font size and sentence length to easily focus on specific letters, words, or phrases. It can also be used by those with learning disabilities and visual processing disorders. The slider moves easily to help people sound out words. Spot On Reader's sturdy and lightweight construction provides ease of use that is fast and easy to print. Print Settings Rafts: No Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.1 layer height Infill: 20% Notes: Print the main piece with support across the open bar where the slider fits. I would not recommend printing in white because there wouldn't be the contrast desired against the white paper. It takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes to print on my printer and uses 14 grams of filament for all pieces. How I Designed This I already created two other projects for the MakerEdChallenge2, so my ideas for what else to create were slowing down. I asked my mom, who is a speech therapist, what could really help the kids that she worked with or just kids in general. She said that a common problem is when she teaches students how to sound out words and to isolate syllables she has to use big pieces of paper that are hard to manipulate and get in the way. I came up with one prototype, but it was too flimsy and was not stable enough. I then thought of creating a main piece with two sliders that would adjust the font size and line distance. I created it with only sketches and extrusions. For design, I added in a picture and traced it in the sketch mode. I then extruded it inward to cut out the design. I also used the fillet feature to create some rounded edges. I had to make some minor adjustments to the slider to ensure a great fit. If you are trying to design something, I would recommend getting a digital caliper because it will help with getting very exact measurements. The length of time to improve each student’s reading fluency is dependent on each student’s learning abilities. Preparation To prepare, first assess the student’s current reading ability and select a word, sentence, passage, or book that is only slightly challenging. Next, have them use Spot On Reader to help with the more difficult words by moving the slider as they sound out each syllable. If they do not read yet, read to them, having the student read the simpler words. You can also help the student by prompting them to finish words or sentences you have started. References None Rubric and Assessment Once the student has learned to read and pronounce new words without the help of Spot On Reader, they have completed what this product was trying to teach. Handouts and Assets I would recommend reading Dr. Suess books because the rhymes create repetition which helps with early reading fluency.
