Spool Terrain - Sci-Fi (Hatchbox and Amazon Basics)
thingiverse
I'm trying to find a creative way to reuse my old filament spools. Wargamers are known for their resourcefulness in repurposing materials, and turning them into terrain pieces is a popular hobby. I've taken some initial measurements and sketched out basic designs for spool toppers and floor coverings that can be 3D printed from recycled plastic. Next, I plan to create low walls or railings to surround the outer perimeters of my terrain boards. One step at a time! I measured Amazon Basics PLA and Hatchbox PLA rolls to come up with these designs, so feel free to adjust the sizes to fit your own leftover spools. These prints should be straightforward and print flat without supports. Some light sanding will likely remove most of the layer lines. This is still a work in progress, and I haven't had a chance to test it yet. As soon as I do, I'll share my results and appreciate any feedback you have! UPDATE 1/25/2019: I've resized the Hatchbox version to match the Amazon Basics one, added rails, ramps, and simple walkways. A ladder is next on my list, but it needs some refinement first. I also plan to create railings that fit over both spools when stacked.
