Spool holder with 3030 and 2020 extrusion mounts

A spool holder which is easy to use with both small and large spools, as long as they have decent walls. Primarily designed for my Prusa i3 MK3S with a Caribou frame, but I adapted the design for 2020 extrusions as well (for a Bear frame), and for a friend's request I made a tabletop version. You'll need four 608 bearings as well.

The holes are sized for an M6 screw on the 3030 version and for an M5 screw on the 2020 version.

Compared to the regular spool holders (where you just hang the spool using the middle hole), it's easier for the extruder to pull the filament, but the rolling resistance is still large enough that it won't pull more than it's actually needed (like with spool holders with bearings, which clamp the spool in the middle).
Thanks to the use of rollers, you don't need to constantly adjust the spacing between the sides when you go to a wider or narrower spool.

Smallest spool tested: 330g PETG spool which came with the Prusa i3 MK3 to MK3S upgrade kits
Largest spool tested: 2kg Filament PM or Devil Design PLA spools (may tip over on the tabletop version)
Other spools tested: 1kg Devil Design, Prusament spools (as long as you don't drop them), 750g Fillamentum, 1kg C-tech (a bit wobbly because of thin walls, but it works), 1kg Creality (seems to come on different spools, some of them are a bit wobbly, but they work)

Tip: if you wish to use wider spools, scale the rollers to the length you need.

Print instructions

Category: 3D Printer Accessories Summary

A spool holder which is easy to use with both small and large spools, as long as they have decent walls.
