I build this exact design for a 44mm aluminum L frame Prusa i3 printer. To hold it together, I utilize a 5/8 inch dowel that passes right through the top hole with ease. Some may wonder why I chose not to go with a more conventional 1/2 inch dowel. Simply put, I happened to have a spare 5/8 inch dowel on hand and saw no compelling reason to change course.
