Spool Holder Locking Clamp
thingiverse
This is a spool holder locking clamp for M8 threaded rod that I've designed to replace the original clamp with a more reliable solution. I use threaded rod as the spool holder axle in my design, which provides a secure foundation for the bearing (check out my double bearing spool holder on Thingiverse). The problem with the original clamp was its tendency to loosen over time, even though it had a threaded mechanism. To address this issue, I've incorporated a small lever clamp that squeezes the threaded rod, ensuring a tighter grip and preventing slippage. The threads on the new clamp are clipped to make it easier to slide along the rod, with only a hint of thread remaining. This design should perform better than the original clamp. To print this design, I used 0.2mm layer height, 80% fill, and support everywhere. It's essential to print a few extra linkage pieces, as they will likely break after use. The cleanup process is relatively minimal. To prepare the pivot point pockets, carefully run a 2.5mm bit through each pocket without letting it walk out of place. Also, round the flat areas on the linkage bar ends that touch the bed to ensure smooth operation. When first trying to activate the clamp, you may encounter some resistance due to its tightness. However, the linkage will stretch with use, making it easier to operate over time. If you're using a loose piece of M8 rod or an M8 screw, you can test the fit by exercising it a few times. To remove the clamp from the rod, disengage the lever and squeeze the handles until they touch. Then, slide the clamp body along the rod/axle or swing the linkage out of the way to access the rod.
