Spool Holder for Rubbermaid 21 cup Cereal Box (WIP) - with STP file
thingiverse
This project remains in a state of flux, but the files here appear to be functional - see the update below. A spool holder for a Rubbermaid 21-cup cereal box is being created here. There are numerous boxes like this available, making this design somewhat redundant, but it serves as a convenient spot to store silica gel and keeps narrow spools organized. A small vertical roller helps prevent spools from shifting side to side, moving in a slot to adjust for the width of each spool. To aid with smaller spools, a rubber band was added to the side roller, but this can be problematic when dealing with regular 1Kg spools due to difficulties installing them while the rubber band is in place. For that reason, removing the rubber band or the slider entirely might be recommended when using standard spools. Future improvements may be made to this design, but for now, it works well and there's no pressing need to continue testing since all Rubbermaid containers have already been accounted for (currently 2). This design is based on a template that fits the base of a 21-cup Rubbermaid cereal box similar to the one in the link below. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00XJRMW5M/ The spool holder requires 5 608 (skate) bearings, as well as 4x M3 inserts and some M3x20mm screws (5). There are also 4x M4x8mm screws and 4x M4 nuts needed to mount the baskets. Some glue is optional for attaching the cap on the small roller. Assembling the doors on the baskets involves using the M3x20mm screws as hinges and the M3 inserts to hold them in place. To install the screws, insert them into the base of the basket, then start the inserts, followed by placing the door on and fully tightening down the screws, which will form the hinge for the door. A filament pass through with a screw cover for the same filament dry box setup is also available - it's currently in a work-in-progress state: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3733460 The STP file is included for easy remixing and I'll update this with the final design when it leaves the WIP stage. **Updates:** 8/23/2019 (FINAL) - This is the last update, as I've finalized the design and am satisfied with its performance. The files here are the latest versions, though they may have different iterations, they will work together. Since I haven't printed all revisions, this remains a Work In Progress, but in reality, I don't plan to make changes anytime soon, and any updates will need to wait until more Rubbermaid containers are purchased. 10/29/2019 - It's been found that the sliding guide works best without the rubber band, and sometimes it's removed for 2Kg spools as it makes loading easier. They still function well enough, although one of the pins on the rollers did break recently.
