In my quest for a sturdy spool holder, I found existing designs lacking in strength; they were made of little material and could be easily snapped by hand. To address this issue, I decided to design my own holder using Design Spark Mechanical freeware. The 100mm-radius cardboard spools from Diamond Age inspired the spool size, with room for a 125mm upgrade. Printed in PLA, the holder could have used less material, but I opted to leave it as is rather than saving a few grams of PLA. To hold the spool, I use http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5634. When slicing the design, I tested Slic3r and Cura – using 1.2mm shells, 0.8mm top and bottom, and 40% infil in Cura, and honeycomb infill with Slic3r. The holder should fit snugly onto an 8mm threaded rod, possibly requiring heat to adjust for a secure spool change.
