I designed a spool holder bracket for Joel's (3D Printing Nerd) shelves as part of his contest challenge, and also to test my Tinkercad design skills. Without access to a 3D printer, I'm unsure how well it will print out, but if you can find a way to make it work, I believe it has great potential. The bracket should simply slide over two shelves and then the spool will stay in place due to the cone shapes, hopefully I got the dimensions right so the spools fit easily over the outer cone shape. To ensure its durability, I made this bracket more robust than the standard shelf brackets since it will be moved around frequently and prone to breaking if not designed with strength in mind.
