The British-made Supermarine Spitfire was a WWII era single-engine, all-metal, low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear. This aircraft underwent various modifications, serving as fighters, interceptors, high-altitude fighters, fighter-bombers, and reconnaissance planes. With 20,300 Spitfires built during the war, including two-seater trainers, some even continued service till the 1950s. The Spitfire Mk II (Type 329), an enhanced version of the Mk I, was manufactured at Castle Bromwich and powered by a 1,175-HP Merlin XII engine with a three-blade constant speed «Jablo» Rotol prop. It featured a 33 kg (72 lbs) armour installation for improved protection, including an armoured seat and shielding for glycol and fuel tanks. The RAF utilized the Spitfire Mk II during the initial stages of the battle for control over Western European skies in the early '40s.
