Spiroid worm gear set with asymmetric CAVEX profile
grabcad
This is a study of a Spiroid (TM) worm gear set. The gear was designed with flank points and normals extracted from a very exact CAD model using the Law of Conjugate Action. The root is just a bridge surface between the active flanks, clearing the worm tip.The profile is an asymmetric CAVEX (TM) profile having circular arcs in the axial section.I added another similar model. This one was modeled using computed hob surface normals (normals are included in the step file). The gear tooth flank surfaces are more precise now, actually the only source for deviations is the CAD software surface modeler. The points are computed with 10 decimal places. No iteration is needed, the points are very exact. I am placing cubic splines over the points (first possible source of deviations) and wrap a surface over the splines (the second source of deviations). For a CMM machine 4 decimal places accuracy is good enough, for 3-D printer 2 decimal places are adequate. The worm was generated by helical solid generation from the section shown in the pdf file explaining the mathematics.
