Spirea is composed of around 80 species of deciduous or semi-evergreen shrubs, prized for their prolific spring or summer blooms in white, yellow, pink, or purple hues. Utilize them in mixed borders, as ground covers, rock gardens, or hedges depending on growth habits. Notably, spirea flowers profusely. Optimal care includes fertile, moist but well-drained soil and full sun exposure. Pruning varies based on flowering time: prune after blooming for those that flower on previous year's wood; for shrubs that flower on current season's growth, cut back in early spring to a low permanent framework as buds swell.
