Spinning Top with Articulated Arms

Spinning Top with Articulated Arms

pinshape

I was inspired by a 3D printed articulated butterfly to design a spinning top with articulated arms. The butterfly can be found at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2810756. I wanted the spinning top to print easily, so it prints in two pieces - the main body and arms, and the handle. The main body is printed upside down to minimize support material. I also compared how much it would cost to 3D print versus CNC machine the top as a "what if" scenario where we didn't have 3D printing. This comparison highlights how amazing 3D printing is for home designers. You can watch the video at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeQR9E-MPwBqEpuaIJiE4CQ. The best way to show appreciation and stay up-to-date on my latest projects is to subscribe to my YouTube channel. To print the top, you will need: * Main Body and Arms: 1 * Handle: 1 Print Settings: * Print the main body upside down with arms pointing towards the ceiling to minimize support. * The handle prints upright, so remove some support from the overhanging section on the bottom. Post-Printing: * Once the main body is printed, loosen each arm and make sure they pivot smoothly. Remove any support material between the arms and main body. * Remove support material from the handle and main body, then press the handle into the top of the main body. You can use super glue or epoxy to secure it in place. * Note that when scaled up 2x, the handle was loose. Use super glue or epoxy in this case.
