Spinning Top Toy with Coil
thingiverse
Human: I designed a mechanical spinning top toy with a coil, similar to the Yula, an old Soviet Union toy that whistles, but this one doesn't whistle. It features 10 three-dimensional printed parts and for better rotation you can screw twelve M10 nuts into the "skirt," the largest part of the toy. I 3D printed it in PLA with great results. To enhance the spiral's appearance, you can add a color change at 10.2 mm layer height on the "skirt," then the spiral will be in a different color and won't require manual coloring. Watch this video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/geReOCHCWkg. In the video, I mention three length options; the middle one is available for download at Thingiverse, but you can also get longer or shorter versions from my website: http://www.mytechfun.com/video/25. On that page, you can also find a mini spinning top design for rotating with your fingers. I recommend printing the following parts first: toptoy_screw_coil.stl and toptoy_nut.stl. These are the main parts of the toy and should fit together easily; if not, use some sandpaper on the edge of the coil (see the video). There is a 0.2mm gap between them. The longest print will be the "skirt," but I designed the parts so that if there's any problem with the nut, coil or clutch (for example, it breaks after long usage), they can be printed separately as smaller pieces. I printed everything at 0.15mm layer height except for toptoy_skirt.stl, which needs to be printed with 0.2mm and has a color change at 10.2 mm to get the spiral colored. Have fun printing this toy!
