After being bitten by a radioactive spider, Gwen's life took a drastic turn when she was suddenly granted arachnid-like super-powers that transformed her into a crimefighter dubbed "Spider-Woman" by the media. Janet van Dyne, a retired crimefighter, gifted Gwen with a costume and a set of high-tech Web-Shooters designed to aid in her crime-fighting endeavors. Initially, Gwen's adventures focused on capitalizing on her newfound fame rather than dedicating herself to helping those in need. However, everything changed when Gwen's father expressed his firm conviction that Spider-Woman had the potential to make a real difference in people's lives, and Gwen finally began to see things from his perspective.
