Spider Habitat Fly Trap

Spider Habitat Fly Trap

I absolutely adored this design... My son had an enormous jar filled with spiders. Occasionally, he'd go on fly hunts to feed his eight-legged friends. I came up with a fantastic idea to upgrade their habitat and maybe even eliminate the flies from our yard. I printed a brand new lid for the jar featuring an inverted funnel - a common fly trap design that's proven effective. I also added a top so my son could control when the flies would enter. If we had the right bait, the flies would willingly feed his spiders. During our test, it caught a few flies. Perhaps the flies detected the web because it didn't seem as efficient as a regular trap. My son decided to let the spiders go because he couldn't stand the smelly fly bait at the bottom of the jar. My wife wasn't thrilled about any part of it. I managed to dig the parts out of the trash a few times but haven't seen them in months. An improved design might include some structure to prevent the spiders from spinning webs on the entrance. A removable bottom for easy cleaning would be a fantastic addition. There's a Sketchup file you can edit.
