Here's the spun text: Upgrading my Printrbot Simple Metal with a high-quality spider coupling made all the difference in achieving precise and accurate prints. The original flexible helical coupling was a major headache, constantly stretching or compressing during prints which resulted in uneven layers. When I discovered that the flexible coupler on my Simple Metal was not properly configured for vertical load, enthusiasts recommended swapping it out for a more suitable spider coupling that can handle heavy loads while still allowing twist and compression. To put this new theory to the test, I designed and 3D printed a spider coupling using PLA for added rigidity and stability. For maximum flexibility and shock absorption, the spider component was made from NinjaFlex-SemiFlex filament. After making the swap, my prints have shown significant improvements - even layer thicknesses that were previously marred by inaccurate Z axis readings are now a thing of the past. With a spider coupling in place, upgrading your Simple Metal is an excellent investment. Take it from me - this was a worthwhile project and my prints now have professional quality, smooth to the touch even after many iterations. Print instructions: Begin by printing both couplers (top and bottom) at 100% infill with a robust, unforgiving material like PLA for strength and support. Then move on to print the spider part using an ultra-pliable filament like NinjaFlex-SemiFlex to get maximum flexibility out of your design. Print at only 20% infill since the high elasticity already built in provides enough load-bearing capacity without needing additional solid reinforcement.
