Sphinx-shaped Finial of a Funerary Stele
myminifactory
Attica (Greece) was acquired in 1865, featuring marble from 410 - 400 BC. Since the Archaic period, sphinxes emerged as symbolic sentinels on tombs and monuments, blending human and lion characteristics. Adopted by the Greeks from the Near East in the seventh century BC, these winged creatures enjoyed widespread popularity. Other motifs of eastern origin, such as sirens lamenting death, gained equal recognition. This artifact is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory.
