This is a statue of a sphinx reclining on a square base. A hieroglyphic message has been rubbed out from the base, whereas cartouches appear on the chest. The front and rear portions have been carved down and rewritten with the names of Rameses III and Sehtnakht. Provenance: From Tell Nabasha, temple of Wadjet, pylon. In 1886, excavated by William Matthew Flinders Petrie for the Egypt Exploration Fund, assigned to the EEF by the Egyptian government; presented to the MFA at EEF fifth annual general meeting; shipped over April 1, 1888.
