Sphinx cat puppy - sculpture

This model is a sphinx puppy cat sculpture. The origin of sphinx cats or Egyptian cat is not very clear. Their existence dates back to the period of the Aztecs, who would have had hairless cats many centuries ago. The first records of this breed were found in the early 20th century in New Mexico. There, two hairless kittens were born that did not mate because they were siblings. These kittens were given the name "new Mexican hairless cats". However, these small felines are not related to present-day sphinxes. The sphynx is of Canadian origin. In 1966 a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless black kitten and, with it, the breeding of a new breed began. A lady acquired this peculiar kitten, named Prune, and its mother, Elisabeth, whom she crossed a year later to obtain more offspring. From that litter 7 kittens were born, including 2 males and 2 hairless females. These kittens had serious health problems: their immune system was not able to develop properly. For this reason, the breeding of this breed almost came to an end. However, in the mid-1970s, other specimens of these "naked cats" were found and breeding continued. As early as 1971, the Egyptian cat was already recognized as a breed.
