The New Kingdom (c. 1570- c.1069 BCE) marked a period of reunification in Egyptian history following the fragmentation of the Second Intermediate Period (c. 1782-1570 BCE) and preceding the collapse of the central government at the start of the Third Intermediate Period (c. 1069-c. 525 BCE). This era witnessed Imperial Egypt's expansion beyond its former borders, establishing a vast empire that left an indelible mark on history. The New Kingdom remains the most celebrated period in Egyptian history today, with the legendary pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty - Hatshepsut, Thuthmoses III, Amenhotep III, Akhenaten and his enigmatic queen Nefertiti, Tutankhamun - standing out as iconic figures. The 19th Dynasty produced notable leaders like Seti I, Ramesses II (The Great), and Merenptah, while the 20th Dynasty boasted the mighty Ramesses III. It was during this era that Egyptian rulers earned the title "pharaohs", signifying "Great House" - a translation of the Greek term for Per-a-a, the name given to the royal residence. Before the New Kingdom, Egyptian monarchs were simply referred to as "kings," with the honorific "your majesty" being their sole designation.
