Spherical Projection No.1
thingiverse
This cylindrical projection is a map from the plane to the sphere: Visualize rays of light radiating outward from below the center of the plane, striking the sphere in one point and the plane in one point. Each ray illuminates that point on the sphere mapping it to the point on the plane. If you place a light source at the bottom of this bowl, the beams of light essentially do an oblique cylindrical projection! The curves on the plane cast shadows, projecting them onto a curved surface grid on the sphere. Inspired by https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:202774 I created this with OpenSCAD.
