Spherical Keycap, Cherry MX stem
thingiverse
This is a spherical keycap with a Cherry MX stem. Its design mirrors the SA keycap profile. This design has been around for a while, as it was first made available on Geekhack and has since accumulated several hundred downloads there after its posting. The Thingiverse crowd will undoubtedly discover numerous ways to customize it. Most designs here feature DCS or OEM Cherry profiles. This spherical profile cap stands out, being designed to be slightly taller than a DSA cap but slightly shorter than an SA cap. A comparison figure is included on this page, showing the relationship between these caps in terms of height. As a result, there's ample room to add details such as letters, numbers, or tiny robot faces to the face of the cap without compromising its overall profile. The face of the cap is supported by filleted bridges that clear the casing of MX switches upon keypress. This also enhances the structural integrity of the keycap for those with fingers that can deliver a powerful blow. Text can easily be added to the face of the cap. An example I created, featuring a quote from American Psycho, is included in the files. Keycap stems are notoriously difficult to print due to their stringent tolerance requirements. This design was created with extra tolerance for thermoplastic expansion. If you plan on using it frequently, consider printing a quick version first to ensure that the cruciform fits snugly onto your switches. The versions shown were produced on a laser sintering printer rather than an FDM printer. Enjoy! Please report back any modifications or improvements made to this design so I can see my work in action.
