Spherical Icosahedral Ornaments
thingiverse
Four icosahedral ornaments, each with a diameter of 70mm and an opening at the bottom for displaying on a lighted turntable, are constructed using methods described in thing:39818. Three ornaments clearly showcase icosahedral symmetry elements (six 5-fold axes, ten 3-fold axes, and fifteen 2-fold axes), while one resembles the Times Square New Year's ball and offers a slightly more challenging identification of symmetry elements. The STL files include Icosahedral_ornament_01 with a rosette pattern of 10 rays; Icosahedral_ornament_02 featuring a rosette pattern of 20 rays; Icosahedral_ornament_03 using a three-fold array of Sierpinski triangles from thing:39424; and Icosahedral_ornament_04 with an icosahedron and dodecahedron mapped onto a sphere, complemented by circles at two-fold axes. The DXF files for the patterns are contained within dxf_files.zip, which must be extracted to dxf_files and stored in the directory where gen_icosahedral_ornament.scad is executed. Printing these ornaments takes under 3 hours on a Replicator build platform.
