Speed Square Holster

Speed Square Holster

This is a belt holster for speed squares to keep them handy at all times when working in your shop or on site. It's designed to be adjustable, fitting different size speed squares, various belt hooks, and screw sizes. I ordered a spring clip from Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0035QVSCA) as I expected this item to get banged around a lot and didn't trust a plastic clip. The default settings in the OpenScad file will fit this clip with roughly a 1/4 inch gap above the top of the holster for your belt to hold it. The screw is a 10-32 x 3/8 inch screw with nut. The belt clip is spaced such that the screw head will be below the holster wall when screwed in all the way so as not to scratch up your belt or pants. Print Settings Printer: Wanhao Duplicator i3 V2 w/all metal hot end Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: 0.15mm Infill: 30% Notes: Make sure you adjust the OpenScad file to match your speed square, belt clip, and mounting screw. I printed at 30% infill to give this some strength to deal with bumps in the workshop. No rafts or supports needed. If your printer supports it, you can print it taller to allow the speed square to drop below the top of the holster. In the video, Tom mentions using a screw at the bottom to support the square as it is dropped into the slot. I opted for straight plastic here, and it seems to be working fine. Printed with Hatchbox PLA as that's what I had on hand. Overall, it's holding up very well with regular shop use. Post-Printing Minimal cleanup of the channel may be necessary to address stringing. I just dropped my speed square into the slot a few times to clear them out. To assemble, place the holster on its side with the screw hole facing up. Place the nut on the end of the 10-32 screw a few turns and use the screw to insert the nut into the recessed nut holder in the side of the holster. Take your spring clip and slide it into the slit on the screw hole side of the top of the holster. Slide it down until the clip mounting hole lines up with the nut. Place the screw into the hole and tighten. To use, place the belt clip on your belt and use the V wedge in the top to guide your speed square into the channel. When you need it, just grab your speed square and pull straight up to use. How I Designed This A while ago, I was watching this video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNhWpuWvtEA to learn more about speed squares. At around 3:50 into the video, Tom describes his own holster from a company that is out of business. He describes how to make one out of parts around the house. In looking at it, I thought "I could 3D print that!" Here's the result. This is my first design donation to Thingiverse. I hope others find it helpful.
