He built a spectrometer Public Lab using a cardboard box and web cam. But then he realized that a design was needed where he could control the angle of incidence of light, which otherwise had to be done by eye. So he added a hole in the top cover to experiment with different lasers and also put a hole in the side cover with a cut where a piece of CD film could stay.
