The pointed end of the shaft itself can be sharpened to create a spearhead, or a more durable material such as bone, flint, obsidian, iron, steel, or bronze may be attached to the shaft. For hunting and combat spears, a metal spearhead with a triangular, lozenge, or leaf shape is commonly used. Fishing spears often feature barbs or serrated edges. The word spear originates from Old English spere, derived from Proto-Germanic speri, which comes from a Proto-Indo-European root *sper- meaning "spear" or "pole". Spears can be categorized into two main groups: those designed for close combat and those made for throwing, also known as javelins. Throughout human history, the spear has been used both as a hunting and fishing tool and as a weapon. Along with the axe, knife, and club, it is one of the earliest and most important tools developed by early humans. As a weapon, it can be wielded with either one or two hands. The spear was widely used in conflicts until the modern era, where it continued to evolve into the fixed bayonet. It remains one of the most commonly used weapons in history.
