First off you need to understand that the goal here is not to create an actual model but rather a system that can be used to pose a character in any given situation. The first step in this process is to set up your scene in Maya. This includes setting the units, working plane, and other general settings. Once the scene is set up you need to create a primitive sphere for the body of the character. Next you will need to create the primitives that will be used for the armatures. These can be created using a series of connected spheres or even cubes. The key here is to keep things as simple as possible while still achieving your goal. After the primitives are in place, you will need to use the Maya lattice deformer to shape them into the desired form. Once the body and arms are complete you can move on to creating the legs. These are a bit more complicated but using the same method as before should get you a good result. Finally, you will need to parent all of your primitives together so they act as one unit. This is done by selecting each primitive in turn and clicking "Parent" at the top right of the Maya interface. And that's it! Your character rig is now complete and ready for use in any situation where a poseable character is needed.
