Space Exploration Technologies Corp., doing business as SpaceX, is a cutting-edge American aerospace manufacturer and space transport services company with headquarters located in Hawthorne, California. Founded in 2002 by visionary entrepreneur Elon Musk, the goal was to revolutionize space transportation costs and pave the way for the colonization of Mars. Since its inception, SpaceX has developed a range of innovative technologies including the Falcon launch vehicle family and the Dragon spacecraft family, both of which are currently delivering payloads into Earth orbit with precision. SpaceX's achievements in the field of space exploration have been nothing short of remarkable. In 2008, they achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first privately funded liquid-propellant rocket to reach orbit with their Falcon 1 vehicle. Just two years later, in 2010, SpaceX made history once again by successfully launching, orbiting, and recovering a spacecraft - the Dragon - marking a major breakthrough in space technology. In 2012, SpaceX became the first private company to send a spacecraft to the International Space Station (ISS), further cementing their position as pioneers in the field of space exploration. Their achievements continued with the first propulsive landing for an orbital rocket in 2015 and the first reuse of an orbital rocket just two years later. Under a cargo resupply contract, SpaceX has flown ten missions to the ISS, demonstrating their capability to transport critical supplies to the orbiting laboratory. In 2011, NASA awarded SpaceX a further development contract to develop and demonstrate a human-rated Dragon spacecraft, which would be used to transport astronauts to the ISS and return them safely to Earth. In 2015, SpaceX announced that they were beginning a funded reusable launch system technology development program, marking a major shift in their focus towards sustainable space exploration. In December of that year, they successfully accomplished a propulsive vertical landing with a first stage rocket, becoming the first to achieve this feat for orbital spaceflight. Their achievements continued in 2016 with the successful vertical landing of a first stage on an ocean drone-ship landing platform during the CRS-8 mission. Just months later, SpaceX landed another first stage, but this time during a more energetic geostationary transfer orbit mission. In March 2017, they became the first to successfully re-launch and land the first stage of an orbital rocket. In September 2016, CEO Elon Musk unveiled the mission architecture of the Interplanetary Transport System program, a privately funded initiative aimed at developing spaceflight technology for use in manned interplanetary spaceflight. This ambitious plan could potentially lead to sustainable human settlements on Pluto over the long term. In 2017, Elon Musk announced that two private individuals had contracted SpaceX to send them on a Dragon spacecraft on a free return trajectory around the Moon, marking a major step towards lunar tourism. Provisionally launching in 2018, this mission could become the first instance of lunar tourism.
