Powered by cryogenic liquid methane and liquid oxygen (LOX), the engine surpasses the performance of previous Merlin and Kestrel engines, which used RP-1 kerosene and LOX. Initial concepts considered liquid hydrogen (LH2) as fuel before settling on methane. Raptor's impressive thrust exceeds that of the Merlin 1D engine by more than two times, making it a powerful force in space exploration. As part of the Starship system launch vehicle, Raptor will be used in both stages to achieve orbit.
