New Filament often contains too much humidity even when it comes out of the box. This excess moisture becomes apparent immediately after leaving the nozzle in the form of expanding extrusion. If more water is present in the filament, you'll also notice that the nozzle starts spitting out vapour clouds. The reason for this phenomenon lies in the fact that the water within the filament turns into vapour as it exits the nozzle. The resulting vapour causes the extrusion to foam up, making it difficult to print. This is precisely why many people struggle with printing PVA support filament - its high humidity content makes it challenging to work with. However, if you dry the filament, it becomes easily printable like PLA. Instead of resorting to an oven, which can be unreliable in terms of temperature control, consider using a fruit dryer as a more practical solution. Fruit dryers are kitchen aids that cost around 100 Euro and offer a temperature range of 40 to 70°C. The main issue with using a fruit dryer for large filament spools is their size - a 2.5kg spool can easily exceed the capacity of a typical dryer. To overcome this problem, you'll need a custom-made spacer that fits snugly between the dryer and its top lid. This spacer allows you to dry multiple spools at once by stacking them one above the other. The spacer in question is specifically designed for use with the "Stöckli Dörrex" fruit dryer. When printing with PLA, be sure not to exceed a temperature of 55°C. PETG, on the other hand, can handle temperatures up to 60°C without issue. Drying a spool of filament typically takes 20 hours or more, so consider investing in a timer-free fruit dryer to avoid any limitations on drying time. For optimal results, print the spacer using PETG.
