I love Calvin and Hobbes, and Bill Watterson's creative genius is unparalleled. To show my appreciation, I decided to create a Spaceman Spiff spaceship, breaking it down into manageable pieces perfect for small 3D printing beds with less than 4.75" (120mm) cubed space. If you have the bed capacity, feel free to print it all at once. The canopy, however, would require separate printing, sanding to smooth out imperfections, and then resin casting and molding. Print Settings: Printer: The QIDI printer, a Flashforge Creator knock-off, was my chosen 3D printing device for this project. Rafts: No raft was used in the print settings. Supports: Yes, supports were added to ensure stable prints. Resolution: A resolution of .010mm was set to achieve high precision. Infill: For the ship hull, I opted for an infill density of 100%. For the chair, a more moderate infill density of 10-15% would be suitable. Design Process: Solidworks I designed the entire Spaceman Spiff spaceship using Solidworks software. The program allowed me to separate the design into individual pieces, making it easier to set up for 3D printing. Next, I used Slicr to organize these pieces for printing on a smaller bed.
