Space Troop Carrier
cults3d
This is my "Space Troop Carrier" from the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie that im not allowed to name https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120201/ Assembled she comes in at 806mm long, about 210mm wide, and about 233mm tall mounted on the base. She weighs about 2.5kg, and will take a total of about 200 hours to print. Though that’s based on the print speed of my printers, yours may vary a bit. The parts are designed to be printed on an FDM printer with a 200x200x200mm print volume. When screwed together, the ship is rigid (I spent a lot of time getting it structurally sound), but the centre frame has been designed with the ability to add an 8mm rod down the middle for support. If you can’t find an 8mm aluminium rod or tube at a hardware store, hobby shops should have 8mm carbon fibre tubes that are used in model aircraft. The ship has loads of empty space inside, and is designed to be lit. The bulk of it should be lit with fibre optics to keep the lights in scale with what is seen in the movie. There should be plenty of space for them inside. The engines can also be lit with 3mm and 5mm LEDs. Mounts for the LEDs are designed into the engines, and channels are designed into the engine mounts to allow wiring to be run to them. I have fully printed the model myself to ensure parts fit, its structurally sound, and just generally “works”. The ship in the movie does have a lot of little raised panelling, and bits of greebly piping. I have not added that small detail as it will make it difficult to sand larger parts smooth with lots of little raised parts present. Plus, a lot of that greebly detail will be too small for a printer to nicely print anyway. These details are better done with thin styrene sheet and rod. However, a number of the small parts such as the various guns are modelled, and intended to be printed on a resin printer. I have included versions of these parts without the thin details as well so they can be done on an FDM printer.
