Space Station Vjuga

One day, before the deployment of the Dead Hand nuclear missile defence system "Perimeter", there was a secret nuclear deterrence programme called "Vjuga" (blizzard). A silent eye in the sky, this space station had a crew of two who stayed for a long time, and its purpose was to listen and watch for nuclear explosions on Soviet territory. The space station would then strike with six nuclear warheads each weighing 500MT. The station relied completely on visiting resupply craft to boost its orbit, as the manoeuvring module had been replaced by nuclear warhead tubes strapped to their third stage boosters. This eliminated the long ascending trajectory, allowing nukes to strike almost immediately, making any missile defence system useless as long as the station was unreachable in a high geosynchronous equatorial orbit (GEO). There are only two test firings known, both of which successfully hit targets at Kamchatka. There is no historical evidence that actual nuclear warheads were delivered to the station and armed, but it caused enough concern for USA space bomber "Space shuttle" flights to be cancelled over Kremlin. Modules GN (Гнездо) - docking module for resupply ships, containing four large viewpoints used by cameras and telescope. KBO (Командно-бытовой отсек) - command and living module, the main place where crew members lived and worked. It contained a Фреон command and guidance computer, equipment racks, sleeping stations, and storage lockers. AO (Агрегатый отсек) - cold / vacuum storage and equipment space. RO (Ракетный отсек) - missile module containing tubes with six 500MT nukes strapped to third stage boosters.
