The initial concept consisted of two solid rocket boosters strapped to a massive fuel tank, which in turn supported the orbiter vehicle. Equipped with a robust thermal protection system, it could withstand the intense heat generated by atmospheric friction. The wingspan of the space shuttle measured 78 feet, while its length reached an impressive 122 feet. At liftoff, the combined weight was approximately 2 million pounds, generating a staggering 6.9 million pounds of thrust upon ignition. Once in orbit, the space shuttle's primary mission involved deploying satellites and conducting spacewalks. It could also serve as a mobile laboratory for various scientific experiments. The design of the space shuttle underwent several modifications over its service life, with each upgrade improving its performance and safety features. Despite its complexity, this incredible machine remained an essential tool in the field of space exploration until its retirement in 2011.
