The Kolomna Locomotive Works designed and built a powerful Soviet main freight steam locomotive type known as the class L. These locomotives were nicknamed Swan due to their distinctive design. The L class 2-10-0 was the first Russian locomotive to utilize Boxpok-type wheels, which became a standard feature in steam locomotive design after World War II. A unique casing between the dome and chimney covered a critical steam drier pipe on this locomotive type. This innovative design was created under the supervision of L.C. Lebedyanski shortly after World War II. Initially designated as Class P, it was later redesignated as Class L in honor of its designer. The class L locomotives were primarily used in conjunction with the FD class 2-10-2 to haul mainline goods across the vast terrain of the Soviet Union. Over a period of ten years, from 1945 to 1955, more than 4,000 L class locomotives were constructed and operated by the Soviet Railways until their eventual retirement in 1975.
