During WWII, the Soviet Union utilized the T-40 amphibious scout tank, an amphibious light tank equipped with one 12.7mm DShK machine gun. Unique in its ability to ford rivers without a bridge, it was primarily designed to arm reconnaissance units. A land-based version, the T-40S, was produced but later redesignated as the T-60, which was cheaper, simpler, better-armed, and could fulfill most of the same roles, leading to T-40 production termination. The vehicle saw action mostly in Operation Barbarossa, Moscow's defense, and was rarely seen thereafter; it was used in Soviet training schools until 1946. Out of these, 44 examples were later fitted with Katyusha rocket launchers firing 82mm unguided rockets from a 24-rail launcher.
