Southgates - Medieval stone-lined pit
sketchfab
This modest stone-lined depression, likely dating to the late medieval period, has recently come to light at Southgates in Leicester. The model illustrates the pit after its contents had been thoroughly uncovered. Ground settling into an earlier depression beneath the pit's south-east corner has caused damage to the stone lining. The pit was situated in a back yard of a medieval property that once faced onto Southgates. Its original purpose remains unclear, but comparable depressions excavated elsewhere in Leicester have been found to serve as privies.
