South Pole Telescope
thingiverse
This is a highly detailed scale model of the South Pole Telescope, a leading Cosmic Microwave Background observatory located at the South Pole in Antarctica. The 3D model was carefully crafted by the Observational Cosmology Laboratory at University of Illinois as part of an extensive collection of teaching tools designed to demonstrate various types of telescope mounts and pointing systems. An additional zip file is included in the collection, which contains larger assemblies for easier printing on SLA, Object, or other 3D Printers capable of handling overhangs. Print Settings Printer Brand: Ultimaker Printer: Ultimaker 2 Rafts: No Supports: No Resolution: High or Medium Infill: Users Preference, we used 20% Notes: This model requires a high level of printing skill and experience. While attempts have been made to print all parts without supports, your results may vary. To ensure successful printing, supports are necessary for the main dish - print with the concave side facing upwards. Post-Printing The model demands two small 008 O-Rings and a 608 Rollerblade ball-bearing. We mounted our SPT models on acrylic bases. These parts are widely available, but here are two links to Amazon products that can fill the role: 008 O-Rings: https://www.amazon.com/Sur-Seal-ORBN008x50-Number-008-Standard-Durometer/dp/B015O325Z0/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1492464067&sr=8-4&keywords=o+ring+008 608 Bearings: https://www.amazon.com/Generic-Precision-Bearing-Skateboard-Longboard/dp/B00ZSKWZZK/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1492464180&sr=8-6&keywords=608+bearing How I Designed This This model was created in SolidWorks using the planning 3D model developed by members of the SPT collaboration as a starting point. Several undergraduate astronomy and physics students learned SolidWorks while helping recreate these parts. Primary modeling and re-modeling were done by Robert.
