The South polar skua, Catharacta maccormicki (Saunders, 1893), usually lays two eggs but typically only one chick survives. The older chick aggressively eliminates or forces out the younger sibling if a temporary food shortage arises, causing it to wander off and perish from starvation or predation. This specimen was discovered frozen dead near the Italian research station "Mario Zucchelli" in the late 1990s, with voucher number MNA 12147 on file.
