South Pointing Chariot

A Chinese chariot, marked by a figure on top pointing south irrespective of its direction, is driven by two wheels that activate gears and a differential for the figure's movement relative to the chariot. Although requiring precise dimensions for accuracy, it was popular at public events. First developed around 2600 BC but confirmed in 200 AD by Ma Jun, it later lost its secret and was reinvented several times. The current model is based on George Lanchester's 1947 design using a 1:1 ratio between the wheels and differential, and a wheelbase equal to the wheel diameter.
