The first steam-powered locomotive was conceptualized by Richard Trevithick in 1804. It made its maiden voyage on a tramway at Penydarren Iron Works in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales. The engine, known as the Penydarren Locomotive, hauled a train of ten tons along a 9-mile track. Although it was not a commercial success, this groundbreaking innovation paved the way for further locomotive development.
