Souk in Cairo
sketchfab
Cairo's souk comes alive in the bustling market bazaars of Egypt, where Dr Iskandar spent countless hours exploring the Khan El-Khalili. He vividly recalls these vibrant flea markets teeming with people and goods – clay and copper vessels stacked high, jostling for space alongside exotic treasures and trinkets. This water vessel, complete with a built-in faucet and resting on three sturdy legs, draws inspiration from ancient traditions of clay pots used to store and dispense water in various cultures. The alkalinity of clay was believed to neutralize the acidity of certain waters, further cooling them to perfect temperatures in scorching climates. In Egypt, this clay olla earned the nickname "poor man's fridge and water purifier." This full-bodied pot, adorned with a snug lid and earthy tones, exudes a sense of nurturing and affirmation. The surface of its bulbous body is intricately patterned with incised designs – herringbone motifs dominate the upper three rows, while slanted "s" lines adorn the lower bands.
