The Sopwith Triplane was a pioneering British single-seat fighter aircraft designed and built by the Sopwith Aviation Company during World War I. Nicknamed the Tripehound or simply the Tripe by its pilots, the Triplane entered operational service with the Royal Naval Air Service in early 1917, quickly earning its reputation as a successful fighter. Although it was built in relatively small numbers, the Triplane remained a valuable asset until Sopwith Camels arrived on the scene in late 1917. Surviving aircraft continued to serve as operational trainers until the war's end. The "Black Maria" flown by Raymond Collishaw of No. 10 Naval Squadron is the aircraft depicted in this model.
