This marble sculpture is a first-century AD reproduction of an ancient Greek original dating back to the early fourth century BC. The work portrays Sophocles. Sophocles (c. 497/6 – winter 406/5 BC) ranks among three renowned ancient Greek tragedians whose works have endured. His initial compositions were written concurrently with or following those of Aeschylus, and preceding or contemporaneous with those of Euripides. Over the course of his life, Sophocles penned more than 120 plays, yet only seven remain intact: Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus. For nearly five decades, Sophocles dominated the theatrical competitions in Athens' city-state during the sacred festivals of the Lenaea and Dionysia. He participated in thirty events, securing twenty-four victories and never ranking lower than second place. Aeschylus claimed thirteen championships, while Euripides won four titles.
