Sophocles

The plaster cast was purchased in 1898 following the discovery of a Roman sculpture unearthed at the theatre of Terracina, Italy. This work is a replica of a long-lost Greek original created approximately 330 BC, roughly one century after Sophocles first presented his tragedy to the world. Sophocles' works are widely recognized today, including the tragic tale of King Oedipus, who has significantly influenced psychoanalysis as the archetypal myth of universal guilt, particularly in relation to a boy's unconscious longing for his mother and his instinctual desire to murder his own father.
