There are a series of sharp clips on the inside of the earpads of these headphones that push on the cartilage of my ears and make them uncomfortable to wear. This is a ring that fits in between the plastic frame of the earpad and the foam overlay. It covers those clips and provides quite a bit more comfort for me. There's no noticeable affect on sound quality or noise cancelling.
