The PlayStation Portable, a handheld game console created and distributed by Sony Computer Entertainment, made its debut in Japan on December 12, 2004, followed by North America on March 24, 2005, and PAL regions on September 1, 2005. As the initial handheld installment in the PlayStation line of consoles, it led the way as a seventh generation console, competing primarily with Nintendo's DS. Development of the PSP began during E3 2003, and the system was unveiled at a Sony press conference on May 11, 2004. Upon its introduction, the PSP became the most powerful portable console available, marking the first time that a handheld device could genuinely rival Nintendo's consoles after numerous previous attempts had failed. The PSP's advanced graphics capabilities made it an extremely popular mobile entertainment option, allowing users to connect seamlessly with PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 consoles, computers running Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh software, other PSP systems, and the Internet. The PSP utilized a unique storage format known as Universal Media Disc (UMD) - a cutting-edge technology at the time. Critics received the PSP overwhelmingly positively, and during its ten-year lifespan, it sold over 80 million units worldwide. Various models of the console were released before it was eventually succeeded by the PlayStation Vita in Japan in 2011 and globally the following year. The Vita maintains backward compatibility with PSP games purchased through the PlayStation Network store, which became the primary means of acquiring PSP games after Sony discontinued access to the store from the PSP on March 31, 2016.
